Giving equal time today to Dr. Ben Casey as yesterday was Dr. Kildare’s day. Ben Casey was actually my first love. I swooned over his swarthy, dark looks and, truth be told, collected more Casey than Kildare. Although I acquired this actual pair of 3D lenticular “Ben Casey As Portrayed By Vincent Edwards Cuff Links” at Chic-A-Boom in Hollywood in 1980, I did actually have this exact pair as a kid. They went to school with me almost every day as I became fanatic about wearing blouses with long sleeves and cufflinks holes just so I could have Dr. Casey with me.
These “As seen on ABC Network TV” cufflinks were made by Bing Crosby Productions exclusively for Sears. Gerald Sears Sales Promotion Service, not THE Sears, in 1962.

In my school you had to make a choice between Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey. And did you have a shirt that was either a Kildare or Casey shirt depending on your preference. And weren’t Dr. Kildare and Yvette Mimieux the absolute dream couple? At least when you’re ten. And who doesn’t know “Man, Woman, Birth, Death, Infinity”? Damn it’s great getting old. All that junk in your head then it starts dripping out.

I watched them both but leaned a little more towards Ben Casey because I will loved how intense the theme music was. It really revved me up and got me going for a dramatic medical adventure. But with this said, the first lyric I ever wrote was to the melody of the Dr. Kildare theme, “three stars will shine tonight”. It was a theme song for my color war team at camp. I’ve had a great songwriting career so I remain indebted to Kildare. And, yes, Dr. Kildare and Yvette Mimieux make the absolute whipped cream with a cherry on top couple.
