Artist-beard-mustache_9737

I can’t imagine that many people working at Bayshore Industries, the company responsible for this follilicular fun for the face, knew many actual artists to pattern their work after. Not only is it a mix of stereotypical arty types – 1950’s bearded beatnik above the neck and 1960’s flower power below – it appears the designers had little regard for what artists have to say as they forgot to leave a hole for the mouth.

MLK-matches-V

I have tons of MLK memorabilia – busts, rugs, pens, cufflinks, ashtrays – but this book of matches is one of my favorites. Comes in a matching set with Jackie Robinson, Mahalia Jackson, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Lorraine Hansberry, Zora Neale Hurston, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Bill Pickett.

I, thankfully, have found three sets of these over the years so have slowly struck the first MLK, © 1976 Universal Match Series 1, which is down to three matches and counting.

Yes, the name and graphic are fantastic but couldn’t they have spent a little more time thinking about their target customer before they named the shade “Off Black”?! I’m pretty sure what shade the marketing guy at the Standard Hoisery Co. of Brandon, Miss. was…  Not to mention that ‘pantyhose’ is one word.

Jesus-use-me-LP

With the hairdo on the left looking like the perfect bundt cake, a bulldog in the middle and a bouffanted Jay Leno on the right, what Jesus used was The Faith Tones’ heads to perform some of the most astounding hair artistry in the history of Christian album covers, the Kentucky Derby of cheese championships in the 1960’s and 70’s.

I love that The Faith Tones invested in matching baby blue polyester tops that would go up in flames if a match were within twenty feet of them but stopped short of buying matching blouses or scarves or whatever they’re wearing underneath. I suppose the theory was “no one will notice” and with the indisputably best hairdos of the 20th Century they were almost right.

Although this LP has made the Internet rounds, something so astounding always bears repeating. The Faith Tones and their heavenly follicles have indeed ascended to the throne of Kitsch Klassics!

Instant action can o’ Bab-o, good for cleaning the usual stuff plus “rubber rollers on wringers, etc.” I’m one of the few people who do, in fact, have “rubber rollers on wringers, etc” as I use a 1940’s wringer washing machine as a beer barrel at my parties.
One of my favorite product names ever, the can-o Bab-o’s from the early 1950’s.

I always loved the drums in the Bab-o commercial.  I still use that muffled tribal beat in tons of songs I write.

Bowling-Ball-And-Pin-Cup_3002

I’m not a bowler but I love bowling artifacts and memorabilia. I’ve had bowling balls planted in my garden so they look like moon rocks for almost 30 years. I wear bowling shoes. I use bowling bags as purses. I don’t even need to comment on the beauty of bowling league shirts. And I enjoy a nice cup of vanilla with a hit of hazelnut decaf out of this ball every morning.

monkees-doll_3062

I’ve never seen one of these that worked properly or where the heads stood up straight but still it’s one of the most prized collectibles of  Monkees memorabilia. Although I loved the just-ingested-mushrooms quality of their TV show and the supreme popiness of the records, I never had a favorite Monkee as my head was buried so deeply in Motown.

When I co-wrote The Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There For You”, we were told to write something Monkees-ish. The Last Train To Clarksville definitely pulled into the station during those sessions.

Made by Mattel in 1966, this pull string doll was part of a flood of Monkees merchandising that included small rubber dolls with weird pajama feet, hard and soft lunch boxes, games, Monkee Mobiles, cufflinks, comic books and more. Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones were everywhere that year, not the least of which was on the shelves in my bedroom.

Not sure what the hand stitched surgery was meant to heal but probably involved efforts to restore vocal cords.

Here’s how I spend my spare time, making this highly sophisticated -NOT- animation with Prudence Fenton, of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Peter Gabriel videos fame. After being a private joke for 15 years, we’ve finally committed (in all senses of the word) the Pigmy to film. If anybody deserves a place on the mantle of Kitsch Klassicism, it’s Pigmy Will.

We’ll be churning out two to four of these weekly, all under 30 seconds, as fast as our minds can de-numb and fingers can move.

Today’s offerings include “Pie Day”, “The Counter”, “The Boat Ride” and “Take 20”. At the end of each masterpiece you can click through to the next one. So just click here or on one of the videos below to get started.

Follow pigmywill on Twitter! And join his fan page on Facebook if you’re there too.

See all 4 Pigmy Wills (by the time you read this there may be more):

car-2-sides

Today’s KOTD was supposed to be the launch of “Pigmy Will”, my new animated series on YouTube, but Facebook seems to be having stomach problems and I don’t want to risk a malfunction on the Pigmy’s big day. So instead, here’s a car I’ve always wanted to buy. Two front ends so you’re moving forward whichever way you go.

This is a real functioning vehicle tooling around in the Culver City, CA area.

“Pigmy Will” coming tomorrow… as long as Facebook recovers all functionality and returns to normal health. In the meantime I’m going for a ride.
