She Is The Music songwriting camp held here at Willis Wonderland

February 13, 2019

Just spent 3 fabulous days with these 20 brilliant female songwriters, producers and engineers who participated in Universal Music Publishing Group‘s She Is The Music songwriting camp held here at Willis Wonderland. We broke off into 3 different groups each day, all writing for the incredible Lauren Jauregui, who was also in attendance and writing away with us. She has a killer voice, is way wise beyond her 22 years, and was amazingly fun to work with. Her exceptional talent was exceeded only by the blue of her teeth from a Ring Pop that lived on the whole way through. This was creativity in its greatest and rawest form for me. An incredible mix of talent, intensity, camaraderie, and a whole lot of laughing and fun. The ladies have arrived! #SheIsTheMusic

With Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans

February 5, 2019

LOVED being in New Orleans with Preservation Hall Jazz Band writing and recording as many songs as we possibly could stuff into four days. If you’re not familiar with this historic band, and it seems most people ARE, google them as fast as you can. Truly loved everyone in the band. Ben Jaffe is a seriously gracious leader and host, the guys are funny and friendly, they are all brilliant musicians, and there’s thankfully much more writing, recording and trips to come. Also, although I have lonnnng cited New Orleans as one of my Top 3 favorite cities (Detroit and LA holding down the other 2 spots) this was my first time in New Orleans ever. I went as insane over the city as I always suspected I would! I’ll be posting a bunch more shots over the next few weeks but just to get it going here you go:

Pamela Adlon, The TV Auteur Hiding In Plain Sight

February 4, 2019

One of my favorite people on the planet is Pamela Adlon. Not only is she a brilliant actress, writer, director, producer as evidenced by her hit FX show, Better Things, for which she’s been Emmy nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy the last two years, and not only is she my favorite animated voice of all time, Bobby Hill on King of the Hill, she practically grew up in my house. She was my art assistant when she was 18, schlepping cans of paint behind me while I did tons of music videos. We’ve palled around throughout the years and she’s one of my favorite friends ever, to the point where when I get tired while hosting my parties – my favorite thing that I do – she takes over on mic and runs them for me. Anyway, there’s a great piece on her in this week‘s New Yorker, with a couple quotes by me, so check it out:

“Carousel“ was the first of many songs I co-wrote with ShyBoy over the last couple of years

January 22, 2019

“Carousel“ was the first of many songs I co-wrote with ShyBoy over the last couple of years. That also includes rearranging/co-producing some of my earlier hits like “Neutron Dance” and “What Have I Done to Deserve This”. Jason Arnold a.k.a. ShyBoy and other half of everything Mark Nubar are some of the best and most fun collaborators I’ve ever worked with. Throw brilliant engineer Jeff Hoeppner Into the mix and it’s a Red Vines and M&Ms + party revolving around excellent musical tastes!

I’m on the new episode of The Top Ten Revealed AXS TV! Tonight!

January 20, 2019

Just remembered I’m on the new episode of The Top Ten Revealed AXS TV! Tonight! This Sunday, we’re ranking the best songs of ’79, which was QUITE a year for me with almost 100 songs released, including “Lead Me On” by Maxine Nightengale, “Boogie Wonderland” by Earth, Wind & Fire – those two chased each other up the charts finally getting to #2 and 3 – and all but two songs on EWF’s I Am album. The show tonight is a full examination of all sorts of hit singles that came out that glorious year. So set your DVR starting at 8:30/7:30c with this link: https://vupulse.com/c/2991 and see you soon!

allee and lily

With Lily Tomlin

January 18, 2019

Yes, it’s Lily Tomlin in the photo with me but its who we’re holding up on the phone and both massive fans of who’s most important, my latest and favorite collaborator ever, Ronan the sea lion. MUCH more about Ronan coming later but check out her moves to different rhythms of my EWF hit, “Boogie Wonderland” (co-written with Jon Lind). Ronan is the first non-human mammal ever to be proven to have rhythm (not mimicry like parrots, cockatiels, et al). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYisjieeKK8 And I’m unbelievably pumped for Grace and Frankie on Netflix TODAY!
