“Carousel“ was the first of many songs I co-wrote with ShyBoy over the last couple of years. That also includes rearranging/co-producing some of my earlier hits like “Neutron Dance” and “What Have I Done to Deserve This”. Jason Arnold a.k.a. ShyBoy and other half of everything Mark Nubar are some of the best and most fun collaborators I’ve ever worked with. Yes, it’s Lily Tomlin in the photo with me but its who we’re holding up on the phone and both massive fans of who’s most important, my latest and favorite collaborator ever, Ronan the sea lion. And Diva was the baby Zappa when I camped out at the Zappa abode for many a year starting in the 90’s on. Lots of cheese consumed.
Anyone who knows me knows I have a severe MOTOWN fixation. And it don’t get more severe than Suzanne De Passe, my friend for 30 years and with whom I recently shared a burger and much gossip. First Suzanne become Berry Gordy’s top creative assistant when she was 21, then she discovered the Jackson 5, then became President of Motown Productions, then co-wrote Lady Sings The Blues, produced Motown 25, the show that provided the sacred ground upon which Michael Jackson debuted the Moonwalk, and on and on to this very day.
With Lisa Loeb Official, my ol’ friend and neighbor and mom of the best Girl Scout cookie saleswoman in the world, at the SONA celebration for #1 songwriter this month, Sam Hollander’s celebration at The Hotel Cafe a few weeks ago. Although we’ve never written together – which is SOOOOO stupid there’s not an adequate word for it – Lisa won a Grammy last year, rocks on hard, and is also a phenomenal cake and cookie maker herself, as evidenced by the Allee cake she brought to my birthday about 10 years ago.
