“The Music Scene” variety series, ABC
“On the left is Larry Hankin, me in a hand crocheted pants ensemb (I had several), Tom Smothers, David Steinberg, Chrissy (—–) and I can’t think of the other guy’s name. The five of us were a comedy troup that introduced hit songs of the week from Billboard. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, everybody did concerts on this primetime show. It only lasted half a season. It was 45 minutes long, programmed back to back with another 45 minute teen targeted audience. Parents were up in arms over seeing ‘long hairs’ and ‘dopers’ in prime time. I first performed Lucille the Rubber Freak and Ernestine (without hair or costume) on this show. Also, Fast Talker, which I did with Bobby Sherman. When this show was cancelled mid-season, I went over to Laugh-In and my first air date was Dec. 29, 1969. And Ernestine became a sensation, literally, overnight.”
