This is a print of the classic Tretchikoff “Blue Lady”. It’s big, about 2 feet by 3 feet. Like the Mona Lisa, the blue lady is a woman of mystery. She looks off and down to the side, with her arms folded in front of her. Her expression is somber, with a hint of something – anger? anguish? Perhaps she is looking at her child, playing on the floor, innocent and unaware of the hard life ahead. Or maybe she suffers from gastroentestinal distress. That would better explain her skin tone.
What Allee has to say about this: This gal, also known as “Chinese Girl” and” Green Lady”, was painted in 1950 and pops up so often she’s beyond iconic. I’ve had the chance to buy her at least 10 times over my almost 40 years of collecting, always pass her up because I think nah, she’s too common, and then always want her every time I see her again. I may have to finally break down.
Under normal circumstances I might not have given this a Certifikitsch Of AuthenKitschity but what you’ve written makes me appreciate the kitschiness of what I had always just considered a great artifact of the 1950s. |
