Darling Lily!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lily Tomlin<\/a>\u00a0kicked off\u00a0her new national tour\u00a0<\/a>of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe with a real love fest at Bass Concert Hall last Thursday. The 3,000 or so folks\u00a0in the house<\/a>\u00a0were effusive even by Austin standards; they could hardly wait to get to their feet and once they started applauding<\/a>, they had\u00a0a hard time stopping<\/a>. For her part,\u00a0Tomlin beamed<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0enthusiastically told the crowd<\/a>\u00a0how much she loved Austin and\u00a0what special city it was to her<\/a>. It might have seemed like so much concert bosshwah – “Aus-tin, are you ready to rock?” – but for the mention of UT Theatre Department Professor Emeritus Ruth Denney,\u00a0whom the performer befriended during a visit here in the Seventies<\/a>. And\u00a0seeing Tomlin embrace<\/a>\u00a0Denney at a reception following the show, as well as spend an hour\u00a0chatting merrily<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0anyone who approached her<\/a>, contributed further to the idea that this was no ordinary stop on the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the show itself<\/a>: More than a decade since its debut, the script by\u00a0Jane Wagner<\/a>\u00a0is a marvel – still\u00a0astonishingly tight<\/a>, weaving\u00a0sharp observation with bright one-liners<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0a gallery of vivid characters\u00a0<\/a>– and Tomlin’s performance of it as crisp as autumn. I was struck this time around by the show’s similarities to Our Town, by Thornton Wilder. It has the same\u00a0simplicity<\/a>\u00a0of setting, same\u00a0sense of theatricality<\/a>, same\u00a0direct address to the audience<\/a>, same\u00a0expansive view of humanity<\/a>, same\u00a0sense of human folly<\/a>, same\u00a0compassion<\/a>, same\u00a0generosity<\/a>, same\u00a0touch of the cosmic<\/a>.
