PRESS RELEASE / LOS ANGELES

The Dorothy Goldeen Gallery is pleased to announce a major exhibition for multimedia artist Allee Willis. The dates of the show are June 18 through July 23, 1988.

The exhibition is entitled, "What have I done to deserve this." The show will include 3-dimensional paintings, some of which incorporate movement and music, and furniture designed by the artist.

Allee Willis is a Los Angelesbased artist/songwriter whose credits include writing songs that have sold over 40,000,000 copies internationally. The title for this exhibition is taken from her latest number one hit, "What have I done to deserve this" by Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield. She also wrote The Pointer Sisters' "Neutron Dance" and Patti La Belle's "Stir It Up," from the Grammy-winning Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, Earth, Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland" and "September" and Maxine Nightengale's "Lead Me On."

Willis has also art-directed music videos; these include The Cars' "You Are the Girl," Julie Brown's "Trapped in the Body of a White Girl" and Breakfast Club's "Right On Track," for which she received an MTV Video Award nomination.

Allee Willis' artwork, like her music and videos, captures the energy and the mood of our time. With humor and whimsey, Willis examines the social landscape as well as current events. Often using one or more figures, she integrates found objects into her 3-dimensional paintings. Some pieces are further animated by music she has written and movement created by motors installed in the pieces.

The materials Willis uses in her work have been highly influenced by her personal collection of 1950's artifacts and objects, documented in books and magazines around the world. She has one of the most prominent 'Atomic' 50's collections in existence. She also lives in a classic 30's Streamlined Moderne house once owned by MGM Studios. In sum, Willis brings together in her object work all of the aspects of her life, both personally and professionally, while reflecting the larger dynamics of society.
