This is a wacky do-it-yourself project I picked up at a yard sale years ago. The pop-ish floral image is actually painted on the glass lens of a presumably broken pair of eyeglasses. It is reverse-painted on the rear of the lens and then entirely covered with a gold-leaf like substance. A pin has been glued on the back so it can be used as a brooch or what have you. Because the paint is on the rear side, the top is smooth to the touch. I bought it before I realized it was a glasses lens. Now I know what to do the next time I break a pair. You can see it’s sort of cat-eye shaped, suggesting it’s age.
It’s a pretty nifty little piece of art.
The penny is there for scale.
What Allee has to say about this:
How fantastic that this is an eyeglass lens! The painting itself is so period, very late 60s happy flower shades of orange, shocking pink and avocado. Of course, that there’s a pin mounted to the back so one can wear this creation adds to its significant weight on the kitsch scale.
