Don’t get me started! I have literally HUNDREDS of these Russ Berry “I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH” statues. It will take me a whole day to unearth them from their hidden box pile in the back of my closet. This will have to do.
What Allee has to say about this:
Russ Berry, Paula, American Greeting Cards, all these companies that made these kind of sculptural greeting cards, covered the Pop Culture landscape of the 1960s and ’70s thicker than astroturf. The giant eyes, hard rubber bodies and goony, goofy sayings creeped me out at the time but I’ve seen enough collections since to make me appreciate their beauty and start one of my own. I’m prone to the American Greeting Cards ones as despite being such an MOR, apple pie company, lots of their figurines had to do with hippies, expanded afros and getting high. It’s that kind of incongruity that I love to see in my Kitsch.
